Frost Monthly Q & A

It's that time of year where we are seeing frost delays in the mornings.  
Why is this important and how do I plan for it?

Q: It didn’t get below 40 degrees last night, why does the golf course have frost?

A: Temperature that is reported via news and weather channels is typically taken at 5’. So it can actually be colder nearer the ground especially in a microclimate where there is more moisture and shade.  With shorter days and colder night temps, these cooler microclimates hold frost easier and for longer periods than other parts of the golf course.

Q: I got to the golf course at dawn and there was no frost, but when the sun came out the Superintendent said we couldn’t play because of frost. How is that possible?

A: Frost often happens right at dawn even though the ambient temps are above freezing. When the sun comes out it can create a temperature inversion where the cooler air is pushed towards the ground and the warmer air rises. This temperature inversion can cause early morning frost when there wasn’t any during the night.

Denver Parks and Recreation Centers Passes on sale

As Colder Months Arrive, Denver Parks and Recreation Encourages Residents to Take Advantage of Fitness and Educational Activities at Local Recreation Centers 

As part of the Recreation Center Reopening Plan, recreation center memberships are now offered for sale in-person or online as of Monday, November 1st.  To celebrate the reopening of all 30 Denver recreation centers and to thank customers for returning to their local centers, Individual Annual Memberships are discounted by 45% during November. All recreation centers have returned to (pre-COVID) full operating hours and offer a large variety of amenities, fitness classes and activities.

Three recreation center membership levels are available: Regional, Local and Neighborhood.  These tiers are based on the amenities offered and the hours of operation at each location.  All memberships include access to recreation centers, drop-in fitness and aqua fitness classes, plus access to all outdoor pools during the summer months.

Recreation Center Membership is free to Denver students, ages 5-18, through the MY Denver Card and MY Denver Prime for residents 60 and up.  In addition, all residents within the 80216 zip code are eligible to receive a 90% discount on registration and memberships.  Residents can register for this discount at the Johnson, Swansea and 5090 Broadway Recreation Centers.

 Double Tee starts in winter to avoid frost delays

We've had a busy golf season and the grass needs some rest to heal. In an effort to protect the turf and to avoid frost delays and create more availability we have moved to a two tee start.

• 18-hole courses are doing double tee starts beginning at 10 AM throughout the winter months 
• 9-hole play will be available in the afternoon
• Kennedy will be switching to the Babe/West for the winter split tees starting tee times at 9:30 in November and moving to 10 AM starts in December

Is golf for your child? Your top 10 questions answered

1. Who can play?

Anyone! The First Tee chapters welcome youth of all backgrounds and abilities ages 7–17. All we ask is that they come with an open mind and positive attitude, and we’ll provide the rest.

2. Financial concerns?

No worries—most chapters offer full scholarships or reduced sessions.

3. What about golf equipment?

We have that, too. Most chapters provide golf clubs, balls and tees.

4. What to wear?

You can wear tennis shoes, shorts, or skirts—no need for special golf attire.

5. Where do I join?

We’re closer than you think. The First Tee chapters offer programs at more than 1,200 locations across the country.

6. Are your coaches qualified?

Definitely! We have more than 2,900 active coaches who have gone through extensive training provided by The First Tee’s certified national trainers.

7. What about girls golf?

Golf isn’t a boy’s club at The First Tee. Many chapters offer the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf Program.

8. Is it fun?

Absolutely. The First Tee lessons are activity-based and full of fun and energy! We modify traditional sports that kids might be more familiar with—such as baseball, football, bowling and tennis—to incorporate the four basic golf shots: putt, chip, pitch and full swing.

9. What else?

A lot! Remember that in addition to learning the life long game of golf, kids are making friends, learning communication skills, how to set goals and other life skills that will help them on and off the golf course.

10. Is there a fun fact?

Did you know our chief executive officer, Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., is the son of former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis? When Joe Louis wasn’t in the boxing ring, he was often on the golf course.
