Music Festival updates
Denver City Council Approves Music Festival at Overland Park Golf Course

The annual festival, beginning in 2018, will be a 3-day outdoor music festival hosting musicians from a variety of genres and focused on attracting music fans of all ages, including kids, families, and adults. Although modeled after the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco and New Orleans' Jazz and Heritage Festival, the proposed family-oriented festival would focus on the arts, food and culture of Denver. The proposed festival would have multiple stages and could attract anywhere from 30,000 – 60,000 people per day.

Overland Park Golf Course will be closed for a period of 4-6 weeks to allow time for set up, to properly fence and protect areas, clean-up, and turf regeneration.

CITY PARK UPDATES

Denver to Recommend Distinguished Team for
City Park Golf Course Redesign
On July 20, 2017 City and County of Denver staff announced Saunders Construction, with Aspen Corporation and golf course architect/designer iConGolf Studio with golf design advisor Hale Irwin, and clubhouse architect Johnson Nathan Strohe as the team recommended to lead the City Park Golf Course Redesign and construction. The recommendation will now be considered by Denver City Council and follows a collaborative nine-month selection process driven by a panel of city staff and community representatives, as well as golf and technical experts.
“The identification of a recommended City Park Golf Course Redesign team is a significant milestone in this important project,” said Happy Haynes, Executive Director of Denver Parks and Recreation. “The proposal developed by the Saunders design/build team will allow the City to deliver a project that reduces flood risks in nearby neighborhoods, while ensuring City Park Golf Course continues to be one of Denver’s crown jewels for years to come.”
The City Park Golf Course Redesign process will continue to be community-driven as the recommended team’s initial proposal is refined with input from the public in the coming months. The guidelines and requirements driving the redesign were produced as part of a lengthy collaborative process with the public, representatives of the neighborhoods around City Park Golf Course and the golf community.
At an estimated $40M, the redesign will seamlessly integrate stormwater detention into the course and provide critical flood control to the surrounding community. The updated design will preserve the best features of the current course and retain the traditional Parkland style look and feel of City Park Golf Course, along with modernized amenities that will be enjoyed by neighbors and golfers alike for generations to come.
While development of the ultimate design for City Park Golf Course is ongoing and will continue to be refined with the community, the project is set to include:
  • An 18-hole Parkland style course with par 71
  • Additional course yardage on top of the current length of 6,708 yards, creating a more interesting and enjoyable golf experience for all skill levels
  • A new, relocated clubhouse that allows for “returning nines” (the ninth and eighteenth holes end at the clubhouse), more efficient golf operations, west-facing patios and enhanced views, while preserving scenic views for the surrounding community
  • A full driving range that accommodates all clubs and meets safety needs without netting
  • Centralized facilities for the First Tee youth golf program with opportunity for independently-funded First Tee program enhancements
  • Opportunities for sidewalks to improve community connectivity
  • Preservation of healthy stands of high-priority and perimeter trees, as identified by the City Forester and the community, with new trees to be planted to meet the City’s tree canopy loss requirement
  • Seamlessly integrated stormwater detention that will allow for a highly playable course that includes water features and significant year-round opportunities to improve the quality of stormwater entering the South Platte River
Attached is a bird’s eye view of the conceptual routing plan, looking east. The routing plan will be shared with the community and may be refined based on input.
Collectively, the design/build team has completed more than 200 golf course projects. Examples of the team’s previous work include the recently opened Glacier Club, Jackson Park and Jefferson Park courses, and Lodestone Golf Club,
Denver City Council’s Land Use, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee met on Tuesday, July 25, to consider the recommended team for a City Council vote. The City, along with the selected team, is anticipated to meet with the community to refine the course design in late-summer and early-fall of this year. Pre-construction activities, such as utility relocations, will begin later this fall with course construction beginning late 2017. City Park Golf Course will remain open through the 2017 golf season and reopen in 2019.

The City Park Golf Course Redesign is part of the Platte to Park Hill: Stormwater Systems program that is working to update a century-old stormwater system, provide critical flood control, enhance community spaces, and protect public health and the environment.

Tree Removal at City Park!
Please note that eight (8) trees in the City Park Golf Course will be removed in the next two weeks due to failing tree health and public safety. These trees, in addition to an additional 8 which are not an immediate current public safety hazard, have been tagged with the removal notice since July. These 8 trees that will be removed are located on on or near playing surfaces, and therefore pose a greater public safety risk to golfers if they were to fall down.  If you have any questions or concerns, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. The
Are you playing when golf course maintenance employees are present?   What we wish you knew!!
By Pam Smith
Denver Golf Agronomist

Hello, I am a long time golf maintenance employee with about 30 years of working on a golf course.  From the very early years of my career to present day, one of the first things we learn as maintenance employees is how NOT to interfere with golfers.  You are why we have a job and we want you to have a great day.  Sometimes golfers and maintenance employees cross paths; when this happens here is what I wish you knew:
• Our goal is to get our work done without interfering with your round.
• Our staff gets to work before sunrise to start maintenance operations ahead of golf play -  about 5 am to 1:30pm.
• We must provide consistent conditions so we work 7 days a week.
• If you golf during our normal working hours you will see us.  We do not single out YOUR day for maintenance operations.  We are very predictable!
• We don’t want to interfere with your game but sometimes we get a little too engrossed in our work and don’t always see you.  If this happens, please give us a break and don’t hit into us!  Golf balls hurt and can do serious damage to a person. Stand there with your hand on your hip, look a little annoyed and we will generally get the point.
• Yelling FORE is seldom effective for a maintenance person because we can’t hear over our equipment.
• The Wave:  Many golfers like us to get our job done before they hit the ball.  They give us a nice little wave to finish our work and then we get out of their way and the golfers have the hole to themselves.  Sometimes we get out of your way and give you a nice little wave to go ahead and hit.  Sometimes we wave to be friendly and let you know we appreciate seeing you at the course.
• When we let play off the back for early bird 9 hole rounds our maintenance crews can’t always get ahead of those golfers.  Please give them a break and let them finish their job so they can move on and out of your way.
• We should move mowing equipment away from the green or tee to do our work while you putt or drive.  We don’t always idle down or shut off equipment as it is not an effective way to get our work done.
• We do not watch you hit to judge your shots!  We play golf too and think you are great no matter how far your ball went!  We watch you hit so that as soon as you are done, we can get back to work.
• Some of our employees are brand new and just learning how to do their job.  Keeping an eye on golf balls while learning a new skill is hard.  Please watch out for our new employees and let’s all go home in one piece.
• Let us know if we have interfered with your round and provide as much information as possible so we can work with that employee to improve.
Thank you so much for playing our courses.  You are why we do what we do and we are very happy to have you here.
