Denver Provides FREE Weekday Golf Program For Kids
Sponsored by CoBank

The City of Denver has launched a new pilot program that will enable youth golfers to play for free at city courses on weekdays throughout the summer of 2017.
Underwritten by CoBank, the benefit is available to every child that participates in a golf class through The First Tee of Denver. Program participants will have the standard weekday junior green fees waived at all seven City of Denver Golf courses through September 30, 2017.

“The First Tee does an incredible job broadening access to the game of golf for kids of all socio-economic backgrounds while teaching values that will benefit them throughout their entire lives,” said Arthur Hodges, Senior Vice President of corporate communications for CoBank. “We’re delighted to be sponsoring this initiative and look forward to the benefits it will deliver to First Tee Denver kids throughout the summer.”
For more information on The First Tee of Denver visit www.thefirstteedenver.org or call 720-865-3415.

The
The Heat Is On!
By Steve Hasler
Superintendent, Kennedy

Summer is here and with it comes the rise in temperatures. This is the most stressful time for the turf and the maintenance crews that manage it. Cool season grasses, that are common on our golf courses slow down or stop growing during extended periods of heat. Summer dormancy is a condition where the leaves turn brown and die. Fortunately, turf can recover with cooler temperatures and the grass can re-grow crowns. But during these stressful conditions many factors can attribute to turf damage. The turf is much more susceptible to diseases with higher temperatures and humidity. Proper cultural practices are essential. This includes proper watering, correct fertilization practices, and traffic control. Mowers must be adjusted properly and in good, sharpened condition. Mower damage can create excessive stress to the turf. Raising the mowing height, if possible, promotes better turf health. Slow release fertilizers are much more ideal in summer and do not promote an abundance of nitrogen. Good drainage and water movement through the soil is also very important during summer stress periods.  Weeds that thrive in hot conditions can out-compete with the turf. Weed control with the use of herbicides can also damage turf, careful consideration and proper use of products must be followed.  Insects are at their most active stage in the summer and can damage already stressed turf. More often, golf courses are incorporating drought tolerant grass species such as fine fescue. The next few months are the most challenging for us in maintenance and while you enjoy your next round of golf please know that all of us are working very hard on the courses keeping the best turf conditions we can!
