Denver Announces FREE Weekday Golf Program For Kids
Pilot program sponsored by CoBank will run through summer 2017
The City of Denver is launching a new pilot program that will enable youth golfers to play for free at city courses on weekdays throughout the summer of 2017 beginning June 12th.
Underwritten by CoBank, the benefit is available for every child that participates in a golf class through The First Tee of Denver. Program participants will have the standard weekday junior green fees waived at all seven City of Denver Golf courses through September 30, 2017.
“We are thrilled that CoBank is partnering with us to make golf more accessible for kids.” said Paula Purifoy, Executive Director of The First Tee of Denver. “We believe that youth who might not have otherwise had access to the game will benefit and give them a safe activity to participate in while not in school.”
The First Tee of Denver is a not-for-profit youth development organization that provides affordable access to golf and strives to instill in young people core values such as honesty, integrity, sportsmanship and respect.
They do this through in-school and after-school programs as well as on-course golf camps that integrate life-skills into every golf lesson. The mission of The First Tee of Denver is to educate and inspire kids academically, socially and physically through the game of golf. Since its inception in 2002, The First Tee of Denver has served nearly 40,000 students.
“We have seen the benefits to our communities when children are engaged in positive activities. Denver Golf is working hard to support The First Tee of Denver programs to expand to more schools and underserved neighborhoods. We are eager to see an increase in the number of kids able to participate in golf and enjoy the local and national opportunities The First Tee offers its participants,” said Scott Rethlake, Director of Golf for Denver Parks and Recreation.
“The First Tee does an incredible job broadening access to the game of golf for kids of all socio-economic backgrounds while teaching values that will benefit them throughout their entire lives,” said Arthur Hodges, Senior Vice President of corporate communications for CoBank. “We’re delighted to be sponsoring this initiative and look forward to the benefits it will deliver to First Tee Denver kids throughout the summer.”

What a Winter!
John C. Madden, Jr.
Superintendent, City Park
As we head into the hottest months of the year this is the time we tend to irrigate the most. In order to provide the healthiest soils and turfgrass plants to play on one of the biggest tools we rely on is our irrigation system. Most golf courses have state of the art irrigation control and delivery systems. These systems have computer controls that operate off of evapotranspiration (ET) measurements and work in conjunction with a weather station. In addition, they have variable frequency drive pump stations that pump the water, and anywhere to 1200-1600 valve in head sprinklers that can be individually adjusted to meet specific watering needs of the area that it is in.
The most important detail of the golf course irrigation systems is the efficiency of these sprinklers. Making sure that they are adjusted correctly to water what we need to water and nothing else, the nozzles are free of any debris, and everything is sealed correctly. Here at City Park we audit our heads at least twice a year to make sure they are working within engineered specifications. On a daily basis we adjust heads on our control system to either add or remove watering time from the head, making a site specific adjustment before we increase or decrease the system on a whole.
By doing this we are able to conserve the most water possible in our arid climate. Not only is this something that can be done on golf courses, it can be done for home landscapes as well. Is that dry spot on your lawn due to a clogged nozzle? It might be worth a look before increasing the run time on your head!
