  • By Scott Ellis
    Superintendent, Wellshire Golf Course
Summertime in Denver brings about the best playing conditions on our golf courses. The greens are growing great and the speeds are up. One of the practices we utilize to maintain these conditions is a monthly needle-tining or venting of the green surface. Venting is an aeration practice that can help maintain proper gas exchange and cool the root zone
As a growing season progresses, maintenance practices such as mowing and rolling, as well as frequent irrigation, tend to seal off the surface of putting greens reducing air and oxygen infiltration as well as keeping excess carbon dioxide within the rootzone. Monthly venting helps to alleviate these problems. Additional benefits of monthly venting are increased pore space for rootzone development and the drying of excess moisture which has accumulated with frequent irrigation.
While venting is a type of aeration, it is much less disruptive than traditional core aeration that is done in the spring and fall, and has very little effect on the playability of the green. Most venting is performed with needle tines that are no more than 1/8-1/4” inches in diameter and penetrate the surface of the green 3-4 inches. These small holes will be visible for a very short period of time and within 2 days are completely healed. Venting is performed in conjunction with other practices such as verticutting, topdressing and rolling which keep the green smooth and firm.
Venting will be performed at all of our courses monthly throughout the summer from June-August. Please check with the pro shop for dates and, as always, we hope to see you on the course!
